NRI LIC & Health Insurance: KYC, Who Can Buy, and How We Advise

NRIs often ask whether they can buy or service LIC policies from abroad. Here is a practical overview of eligibility, KYC, premium payment, and health cover — subject to current insurer rules.
Note: This article is general information from an independent insurance advisor, not official insurer material. Plan names, premiums, and benefits are illustrative only — actual terms depend on underwriting, age, and current product rules. Bonuses on participating plans are not guaranteed. Please read the policy document and consult us before buying.
Non-resident Indians (NRIs) and OCIs frequently contact us from the Gulf, Singapore, the US, and Europe about LIC policies and health insurance for parents or their own families in India. Rules change with residency status, currency, and product type — this article explains how we typically guide clients, not what LIC or any insurer “guarantees” for your profile.
Who this is for
- NRIs planning life cover or savings-linked LIC plans with India-based nominees
- Families wanting health cover for parents still in Chennai or nearby districts
- Returning NRIs unsure whether old policies remain valid after residency change
We advise by phone, WhatsApp, and video; KYC and premium payment always go through official insurer channels.
LIC policies — common NRI questions
Can an NRI buy a new LIC policy?
In many cases yes, subject to LIC’s current NRI/OCI guidelines, sum assured limits, and medical underwriting. Product availability and documentation differ from resident applications. We do not quote premiums on this site — only an IRDAI-approved benefit illustration after KYC.
Premium payment from abroad
LIC publishes approved remittance and payment modes for NRIs. We help you understand which options apply; we do not collect premiums on this website.
Servicing an existing policy
Policy status, bonus statements, and maturity proceeds are handled on LIC’s secure portal or branch processes. We assist with paperwork coordination — not with holding your login credentials.
Nominee and repatriation
Nominee rules follow policy wording and FEMA guidelines. For large sums, involve your CA or legal advisor on repatriation; we explain insurer-side steps only.
Health insurance for NRIs
Cover for parents in India
Many NRIs buy individual or floater health policies for parents residing in Chennai or Tamil Nadu. Age, pre-existing conditions, and waiting periods drive acceptance — not marketing brochures.
Can an NRI be the proposer?
Insurer rules vary. Some products allow NRIs as proposers for dependents in India; others require a resident proposer. We check current insurer grids before you apply.
Claims while you are abroad
Cashless and reimbursement claims are filed with the insurer or TPA in India. We help with intimation and document checklists when clients ask — we are not the insurer’s claims department.
How we work with NRI clients
- Discovery call — residency, existing policies, goals (protection vs savings).
- Document list — passport, visa/OCI, address proof, PAN where required (insurer-specific).
- Official illustration & brochure — links from
licindia.inor the relevant health insurer only. - Application & servicing — you sign with the insurer; we coordinate follow-up.

Before you decide
- Confirm current NRI eligibility with the insurer — do not rely on old forum posts.
- Participating plan bonuses are not guaranteed in advance.
- This site is an independent advisor channel, not LIC’s official portal.
